Custom Work
To make your home or office beautiful, personal and truly YOURS is through art. Customers who work with me closely in creating an original piece for their spaces fall IN LOVE with their art. A magnificent view from a hike, a favorite town, a Maine summer sunset, the choice is yours. These are samples of projects I have worked on in the past few years that have been installed in homes near the mountains of Maine to Virginia.
Look over these photographs to see a great variety of subjects, installations, and process. Custom paintings are designed just for you. And they are designed for generations to come.
The process is simple. A quick conversation over the phone or email is enough to get started. I will follow-up with preliminary sketches and size options. In-stock art is readily available, so maybe their is something in my inventory that is just right. Once you have reviewed the sketches and decided on the best option for you, the custom work will begin! Art will be delivered and installed at a time frame that works for you! And, of course, process shots along the way are a must-see. Watch your paintings in process.
Let me know if you have something in mind. I am excited to work with you! You can reach out to me my phone 207.485.5691 or by email helene@helenefarrar.com ~ Hélène
View of Sugarloaf Mountain From Burnt Mountain Trail
After creating this special painting of beloved “Gauge” looking towards Sugarloaf Mountain, I couldn’t wait to meet him. He was a delight. I love smart, cute dogs.
The painting was installed in a Massachusetts home, in a recently restored barn, by a lovely pair of Sugarloafers who call Maine their other home. It was an honor to deliver and install this painting for them.
This painting measures 32 X 40 inches, Encaustic On Panel.
Early Summer Views
This rich and colorful triptych was created for a young family living near Lake Cobbosseecontee in Maine. The painting was inspired by early summer glow and the grounds surrounding their home. Because of the shape of the panels, the paintings feel like one’s looking through window panes. A lovely fit for a roomy foyer.
Each panel measures 24 X 48 inches each.
House Portrait
When a beloved local family made the move to Delaware, they wanted to take a piece of Maine with them. I was honored to paint a front view of their home (dog included). This is an elegant centerpiece to their family room. As one can see here it is the focal point of this space.
18 X 24 inches, Oil on Canvas
Bigelow Mountain
This client has a stunning view of Sugarloaf outside these windows. But in-between the windows large horizontal wall spaces were begging to be balanced with art. I created for this couple a large 8 foot x 14 inch painting with a spectacular view of Bigelow Mountain (Autumn) to fit the space. Upon entering the home, its also the first art piece to see coming in the door and it puts up a good fight against the view outside the window. This photograph is a view looking down from the second floor, one can see how the painting warms up this open concept living space.
Sketch for Monhegan House
This is a process shot of developing two paintings for a client with sentiment for Monhegan Island. Both of these pieces were created in oil paint. Paper sketches were done on-site.
Lake Como
Lake Como in Italy was the gorgeous location of this painting commissioned by both friends and clients. I worked closely with them in designing this panoramic piece, being sure to capture the varied fauna and light of this region.
The painting was created on un-stretched canvas for ease of shipping to its final home in England.
30 X 75 inches. Oil on Canvas.
Flying Practice, Autumn
This monumental encaustic painting measuring at 8 by 4 feet was especially designed for a family in Virginia with familial and sentimental ties to Maine. Inspired by my “Flying Practice” Series, this large autumn view with a big gorgeous sky and starlings flying was the perfect fit for a new home.

Preparatory Sketch
Part of the process in creating a custom piece is working with the client in seeing preliminary sketches / ideas. This drawing is of a dramatic painting of Sugarloaf Mountain through the Evergreens and intended to feel “cold”. You can also see notes about color, texture and composition.

Working Flat, Process Shot
This is a very special painting in process. This painting was designed to depict a beloved vegetable garden in mid-July, the height of growing season. The painting was given as a surprise gift to the gardener himself on a notable birthday. The clients enjoy this painting in their cozy living room, particularly on their coldest of days. This is my view when working flat on my encaustics table.
25 X 60 inches. Encaustic On Panel.
Preparatory Sketch for Garden Painting
For this project, many on-site visits happened in order to get enough information to create this spectacular panoramic painting.
